To Jay Rodriguez: I'd hire you

We here at Citizen Journal despise chain emails. And we rarely post emails here, no matter how witty or outrageous or incisive. But I'll make an exception for this farewell email, which was sent by a Jay Rodriguez at JPMorganChase. Having worked for Big 4 accounting firms and similarly mind-rotting outfits, I can relate.

Dear Co-Workers and Managers,

As many of you probably know, today is my last day. But before I leave, I wanted to take this opportunity to let you know what a great and distinct pleasure it has been to type "Today is my last day."

For nearly as long as I've worked here, I've hoped that I might one day leave this company. And now that this dream has become a reality, please know that I could not have reached this goal without your unending lack of support. Words cannot express my gratitude for the words of gratitude you did not express.

I would especially like to thank all of my managers both past and present but with the exception of the wonderful Saroj Hariprashad: in an age where miscommunication is all too common, you consistently impressed and inspired me with the sheer magnitude of your misinformation, ignorance and intolerance for true talent. It takes a strong man to admit his mistake - it takes a stronger man to attribute his mistake to me.

Over the past seven years, you have taught me more than I could ever ask for and, in most cases, ever did ask for. I have been fortunate enough to work with some absolutely interchangeable supervisors on a wide variety of seemingly identical projects - an invaluable lesson in overcoming daily tedium in overcoming daily tedium in overcoming daily tedium.

Your demands were high and your patience short, but I take great solace knowing that my work was, as stated on my annual review, "meets expectation." That is the type of praise that sends a man home happy after a 10 hour day, smiling his way through half a bottle of meets expectation scotch with a meets expectation cigar. Thanks Trish!

And to most of my peers: even though we barely acknowledged each other within these office walls, I hope that in the future, should we pass on the street, you will regard me the same way as I regard you: sans eye contact.

But to those few souls with whom I've actually interacted, here are my personalized notes of farewell:

To Philip Cress, I will not miss hearing you cry over absolutely nothing while laying blame on me and my coworkers. Your racial comments about Joe Cobbinah were truly offensive and I hope that one day you might gain the strength to apologize to him.

To Brenda Ashby whom is long gone, I hope you find a manager that treats you as poorly as you have treated us. I worked harder for you then any manager in my career and I regret every ounce of it. Watching you take credit for my work was truly demoralizing.

To Sylvia Keenan, you should learn how to keep your mouth shut sweet heart. Bad mouthing the innocent is a negative thing, especially when your talking about someone who knows your disgusting secrets. ; )

To Bob Malvin (Mr. Cronyism Jr), well, I wish you had more of a back bone. You threw me to the wolves with that witch Brenda and I learned all too much from it. I still can't believe that after following your instructions, I ended up getting written up, wow. Thanks for the experience buddy, lesson learned.

Don Merritt (Mr. Cronyism Sr), I'm happy that you were let go in the same manner that you have handed down to my dedicated coworkers. Hearing you on the phone last year brag about how great bonuses were going to be for you fellas in upper management because all of the lay offs made me nearly vomit. I never expected to see management benefit financially from the suffering of scores of people but then again, with this company's rooted history in the slave trade it only makes sense.

To all of the executives of this company, Jamie Dimon and such. Despite working through countless managers that practiced unethical behavior, racism, sexism, jealousy and cronyism, I have benefited tremendously by working here and I truly thank you for that. There was once a time where hard work was rewarded and acknowledged, it's a pity that all of our positive output now falls on deaf ears and passes blind eyes. My advice for you is to place yourself closer to the pulse of this company and enjoy the effort and dedication of us "faceless little people" more. There are many great people that are being over worked and mistreated but yet are still loyal not to those who abuse them but to the greater mission of providing excellent customer support. Find them and embrace them as they will help battle the cancerous plague that is ravishing the moral of this company.

So, in parting, if I could pass on any word of advice to the lower salary recipient ("because it's good for the company") in India or Tampa who will soon be filling my position, it would be to cherish this experience because a job opportunity like this comes along only once in a lifetime.

Meaning: if I had to work here again in this lifetime, I would sooner kill myself.

To those who I have held a great relationship with, I will miss being your co-worker and will cherish our history together. Please don't bother responding as at this very moment I am most likely in my car doing 85 with the windows down listening to Biggie.

One!

When I left an awful environment 3 years ago, I sat down for what they thought was my review. They would not have hesitated to screw me, so this was enjoyable. After listening to a speech about how I had to sublimate my own ego for the good of the team, I handed them a piece of paper entitled "words of wisdom from country music sensation Travis Tritt." It was lyrics to a song:

"Things are going to change, with each new setting sun...starting now I'm looking out for number one."

Then they explained that I had to be a team player, and that I was a worker bee, not a manager. I handed them another note.

"Life is like the iditarod. Unless you are the lead dog, the scenery never changes."

Finally, they told me I had to bend to their will, or I would not succeed. I handed them one more piece of paper that said "I'm done."

I then explained that if they did not let me walk out quietly I would run up and down the hallways singing "born free."

Lastly, to pour gasoline on the fire, I told my female supervisor "I am quitting because I am tired of you as my boss. I want oyu as my equal. Having to sit across from you at this desk, when all I want is to take you on top of it, is too much for me. I cannot work for a woman I want to sleep with."

She turned bright red, until she found out I was leaving for much more money, and a senior management position (although I did want her).

Nobody should ever settle in any aspect of life.

I apologize if this is longer than war and peace.

Hello. I am contacting conservative bloggers around the country since I am one as well. I hope this email is not an intrusion.

Anyway, I would like it very much if you would go to http://www.bloggerschoiceawards.com/blogs/show/21020 and vote for me for best political blog and best overall blog as well, IF AND ONLY IF you feel my blog is of a high quality. I really think I have a legitimate shot at winning. If you are open to spreading the word, that would be cool as well.

Thank you.

P.S. If you are open to doing a link exchange, I get some pretty decent traffic.

Disclaimer: For those of you who are atheists, my perspectives are not intended to denigrate your choices or outlooks on life. I respect everyone's right to choose and I believe my comments have something for everyone; although I am coming from a faith-based position. Thank you for your understanding and openness.

Regardless of whether this is a bona fide email or not is kind of irrelevant in this case because it does lend to the realism of a lot of our actual experiences on one level or another. I look at this email as an opportunity to address a bigger issue, an issue that we all face from time to time. Therefore, let us contemplate upon it as an allegory about Faith, Integrity, and Resilience.

Anytime you work for ANYONE you should be working for our Divine Father/Mother (God); for if you choose to serve man you will be destroyed and abused every time. When you work for the Divine Source, you are aware of the elements that are within the valley low and don't take things to heart (if you have a moment, release it prayerfully). You would listen carefully for instruction on how to navigate through your challenges, do what you are responsible for while you are on that job... have integrity about yourself and what you do, and be prepared when it's time to leave... no hard feelings; for they served a purpose for you too.

Bacteria is not something we generally smile at, but good or bad it has its place and serves a purpose in balancing things. There are many bacteria that are harmful to us, but when used as medicinal therapies can prove very effective. So before you shun the bacteria in your life, ask yourself, "what purpose does this serve for me?"

Mr. Rodriguez's behavior does not serve him! It would have been more beneficial if he would have just left, held his head high, and gave it to God! Man is corrupt (he is with error) and to expect anything different than what he got from the "belly of the beast" is just asinine. When we go into the world we must do it with our heads held high, and our eyes open. It doesn't mean you won't meet good people, nor does it mean that there are good companies out here. However, you must know that you are walking through the valley of the shadow of death. Therefore, put on the Armor of God, and be aware, using discernment all the times.

In his bitterness and OH HE IS BITTER or he would not have written that email, they have beaten him worse than the slaves they once owned because they have his mind. His body has left, but his mind is still with them. They have his thoughts, his emotions, and his focus. Undoubtedly the slaves knew "they" were on massa's land, but apparently HE forgot! Yes I know, I know, there were some like Mr. Rodriguez saying, "We sick boss, what us gon' do?" But many of them knew where they were and that's why they broke North! At some point in the process Mr. Rodriguez thought all his hard work was going to be appreciated and he was going to be a Chase partner some day (I'm being facetious, but you get my point). His mind was on making his mark. Now don't get me wrong wanting to make a place for yourself in this world is not a bad thing, BUT you must realize where you are! DON'T FORGET when you are trying to plant seeds in the grooves of concrete that that is where you are planting them and don't expect to yield a nutritious harvest. You may get some signs of life, but it will be suffocated and limited to that small section, surrounded by no real life... very much like the weeds in the cracks of our sidewalks.

I'm sure ALL of us at some point have experienced something similar to this since we don't work for ourselves or haven't always worked for ourselves. I responded to this and shared it as a redirection of focus because some of us have forgotten where we are and are frustrated with our jobs. Let's look at one of the most profound parts of this story as a reminder:

"To Brenda Ashby whom is long gone, I hope you find a manager that treats you as poorly as you have treated us. I worked harder for you then any manager in my career and I regret every ounce of it. Watching you take credit for my work was truly demoralizing."

Don't ALLOW your spirits to be broken! Your perception CREATES your experience! I'm going to say that over and over until you get this!

Mr. Rodriguez should be PROUD that he worked hard. I NEED YOU ALL TO REALLY HEAR ME ON THIS... NEVER regret your choices when they exemplify fortitude and integrity!! This is an ASSET and NOTHING to be ashamed about. It is a slave's mentality to think somebody "used" you, or "caught you out there," when you are expressing higher consciousness and higher ideals. When you can work in a toxic environment and NOT LOSE WHO YOU ARE... that's something to be proud of! That shows strength of character!

The other side of his message to Brenda is his contempt of her and need for revenge. Revenge only hurts you!! Don't be mistaken about this. This is a hard one for many of us to grasp depending on the circumstances of our emotions, but revenge is never the answer. When you send anything but love out, the absence of love is what YOU will get in return. Pray for that person's awakening, not their pain. Forgiveness is key!

This story is another example of when you must Walk By Faith And Not By Sight! What Mr. Rodriguez is lacking here is faith and resilience. Chase had something to offer him that is why he was there. He should have sifted through the earth that he had gathered in his hand, threw back the rocks and loose sand, and kept the gemstones that he recovered. The Most High's gemstones are in EVERY experience we encounter. We never leave empty handed, unless we fail to understand the value of that which we are holding.

It was his time to go. There is something greater for him! I KNOW this from my own experiences... sometimes we are so hard headed that we can't get our blessings because we can't get out of our own way.

Mr. Rodriguez was disoriented at his time of departure and could not see the boundless possibilities awaiting him. Stay focused Family! Operate from your spirit not from the body.

We need to sow our seeds in the kingdom and realize when we are doing anything else, it will yield weeds not fruit. When you are working in the world, realize it BUT temporary, a stepping stone to greater truths for you. Don't get caught up in the illusions!!
