Ann Coulter being Ann Coulter

"I would never insult gays by suggesting they are like John Edwards."

This (and more!) is the most recent Coulterbomb, which she dropped this weekend at CPAC.

Now, I've defended Ann Coulter in the past and will continue to do so. But when she's willing to torpedo Republicans for the sake of a few yucks, I'll part ways.

Some good comments over at Hot Air. Love Ann, or hate Ann.

I agree with you Bill that she is a bag of gas, but the comment that you have to go into therapy for using the word "faggot" is a great reference (ala Dennis Miller) to the Gray's Anatomy guy who called his co-star a faggot. I guess if she called him an "asshole" that wouldn't be as bad. It is sort of like murdering someone and calling it a "hate crime," somehow converting the murder worse. A murder is equally bad whether it is because someone was gay or just your wife that you dismembered. I think that the hypocrisy of the left and the Republicans is profound. I have called several of my friends "fags." Do I need therapy? Possibly...ask my wife.

Yes, this is a perfect example of Ann Coulter being Ann Coulter, which is to say that she will say whatever will benefit her, the Republican party be damned. Coulter has made a living off of such obviously-contrived controversies as this, and has in turn aided liberals in painting conservatives as extreme cartoon versions of themselves.

I agree with the previous commentator that the term "fag" is now common parlance to describe someone acting effeminate or being a "wuss," and that she was obviously playing off the recent Grey's Anatomy incident (which I think was initially lost on liberals), and therefore I wouldn't say that her comments are necessarily anti-gay (although I have no doubt from her prior comments and publications that Coulter is anti-gay -- it's kind of like a segregationist using an offensive ethnic word in a joke; it just won't go over well) However, most sensible people will not spout the word in a public forum where you don't know everyone in your audience, especially where, by appearing at CPAC, you are basically representing an entire movement. The whole liberal world watches that conference with baited breath for something to pounce on and Ann is only so happy to be the person of focus.

I also note how out of touch and awkward Ann is when she uses such offensive terms. Almost noone says "faggot," which, in my experience, is deemed much more offensive than "fag," which is really the word that is used to describe a "wuss" or "sissy" as she claims to be using the word.
