Where to look

Updates on the Isreali-Hezbollah war are at Pajamas Media, Truth Laid Bear (a blog aggregator) and Hot Air. Between these three sources, you'll find breaking news, media analysis, opinion, etc. -- from what I've seen since last week, if you want to know what's really happening, you'll have to contend with the disparate voices of the blogosphere, read a bunch of sites, then make up your own mind about what's happening and why, and its significance. Sorting through the stories can be time-consuming, but as we've seen, the end result is a far better picture, and more perspective, than the mainstrem media is offering.

Newt Gingrich says it's World War III; our enemies believe it's a worldwide conflict - why wouldn't we?

Bush won't declare this is World War III, and why should the American public buy that label when our government is afraid to label the enemy for who they are, and say what is really at stake? In the first two World Wars, we had no problem understanding that forces such as militarism, nationalism, fascism, and tyranny were in conflict with self-determination, freedom, and for some peoples, survival itself. Even during the Cold War, most people understood that Communism was evil and ambitious, and had to be kept in check. Most Cold War presidents--most notably and forcefully Ronald Reagan, but even Democrats JFK and LBJ--weren't afraid to say that.

But now, all we have is some nebulous blather about "terror" and "evil doers" without any effort to give the big picture of just who the enemy is, what they really want, and what it may ultimately take to stop them. (Hint: It ain't appeasement.) I think Bush and his administration understand these issues, but are too afraid to come out and declare that a war waged by islamofascists against the West is well under way.
