Morning Blend - Thursday, September 1, 2005 - "Getting Things Done"
Citizen Journal is participating in today's Hurricane Katrina Blog Relief Day fundraiser (more info here and here). Hundreds of bloggers have selected a charity and are asking readers to donate through that charity to relief efforts. I've picked Catholic Charities. If you're able to donate, please do. Their message to donors is below the fold.
UPDATE (12:57 p.m.) - liberal blogs say, "us too" and thankfully. Hopefully political snipes will give way to cooperation, and this would appear to be a not-so-bad first step.
The Storm After the Storm - David Brooks, NYT
Mourning My New Orleans - Josh Levin, Slate
After the Storm - Peggy Noonan, WSJ
Why Aren't Public Schools More Like Universities? - R. Vedder, Fox News
The Uses of 'Activism' - George Will, Wash Post
Foggy Bottom Misstep? - J. Mowbray, Wash Times
Income and Poverty in Perspective - J. Hinderaker, Powerline
A Bolt of Youth - Russ Smith, NY Press
From Catholic Charities:
While local Catholic Charities agencies along the Gulf Coast anticipate that they will be asked to provide some type of emergency assistance in their communities, Catholic Charities’ niche in disaster relief is to provide long-term recovery work. Based on past disasters, possible long-term services that our agencies may provide include temporary and permanent housing, direct assistance beyond food and water to get people back into their homes, job placement counseling, and medical and prescription drug assistance.
Commissioned by the U.S. Catholic bishops to represent the Catholic community in times of domestic disaster, Catholic Charities USA connects the Church’s social service agencies and disaster planning offices across the nation. We are extremely grateful for friends like you who enable us to help local agencies as they serve their communities.
The priority for the foreseeable future is Katrina but we also realize that during this hurricane season there is a great possibility that another hurricane or troprical storm may strike our coastal areas this year and with your donation we will be prepared to provide assistance.
Please join us in our prayers for the victims and families during this difficult time.
