Catching up

Having been away from civilization for a few days I was eager, this morning, to check in. I'd left town, after all, on Sunday morning --just hours after Justice Rehnquist passed away and just as the Bush-hates-blacks-just-look-New-Orleans bile was jumping the shark, I hope. This was not the Labor Day dearth of news we know and appreciate.

It's good to see Joe Klein is his usual patriotic self: Taking a cue from Chinese mysticism; Hurricane Katrina and September 11th, he writes:

they send a signal that America's remarkable late-20th century run may not be perpetual. Modifications in the way we live may be necessary. Certainly, the terrorist attacks have changed little things, like the way we ride airplanes, and profound things, like the basic assumptions of American foreign policy. And now there is New Orleans, which, at the very least, should spark a reconsideration of what has become a casual disdain for the essentials of governance and our common public life.

Back on the mother ship, sort of, liberal Senators are calculating their assault on John Roberts and his Catholicism, and this week should be a doozie.

Penn State football update:

Penn State showcased uber-freshmen Derrick Williams and Justin King in defeating Southern Florida, 23-13, in a game that wasn’t that close. Next up: Cincinnati. Prediction: Penn State will be 4-0, possibly 5-0, and crack the top 15 or so before it loses in October to either Michigan or Ohio State. Plenty of reason for optimism, although if anyone knows of offensive lineman, please send them to Happy Valley.
