YES: A Failure

For Yankee fans the most dramatic moment of a Yankee game at the Stadium is the top of the ninth inning with the Yankees one run ahead, Jorge Posada standing on the mound, facemask in hand awaiting the arrival of Mariano Rivera. This drama is punctuated by the headbanger sounds of Metallica’s “Enter Sandman” blaring from the speakers. The fans in the Stadium are on their feet cheering “The Best Closer Ever” as he trots in from the bullpen, his face impervious to the pressure of the situation.

For the YES network, its just another opportunity to sell more ads as they cut away from the drama of the game to line George Steinbrenner’s already bulging pockets. Last night, I finally outsmarted the suits at YES. When they broke as Rivera began his entrance, I cued up Metallica on my stereo and blared away. Mariano set the Red Sox down and I went to bed happy.

Now if only there was some alternative to the odius Michael Kay. Unfortunately, turning to radio provides no solace, only the pompous, egotistical John Sterling. All that cash to strew about, and these are the announcers we get?
