U.S. Capacity to Fight Worldwide Conflicts not Infinite, New York Times Reports

It is now, apparently, headline news that the ability of the United States to wage multiple wars while Iraq and Afghanistan are garrisoned by American troops is "limited." In a breathtaking expose of the obvious, Thom Shanker reports that America's power and resources are...finite.

The cheap heart of Shanker's piece is a quote by President Bush: "we got plenty of capacity." The opportunity to parade something else obvious as if it were not--Bush's colloquial syntax--dovetails here nicely with Bush's semicontradiction of his own Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. One can almost hear Shanker's breath being taken away. "'No, he didn't feel a bit limited,' Mr. Bush said." Insert snickering here. Right?

Except the laughter's rather tinny in the ears of those who still believe that major metropolitan newspapers have an obligation to build their pieces out of more than common knowledge and and an uncommon vendetta.
