Sobriety Please!
Brendan Miniter writes that John McCain's "maverick moderatism" is based upon a "myth" that "the only way to win elections is to draw voters from the other party by bucking a few of your own party's principles." Instead:
Conservatives can and do win elections for the Republican Party. What the McCain Myth ignores is that for now a majority of voters nationwide embrace conservative principles. Talk of being a "compassionate conservative" notwithstanding, it wasn't maverick moderatism that handed President Bush victories in 2000 and 2004. Nor has the McCain Myth been responsible for padding Republican majorities in the House and Senate. Indeed, Republicans have been winning by sticking to their principles and not bucking their party's ideas on tax cuts, national defense or reforming the judiciary.
Fair enough. But Miniter goes on to say that "No one represents the changing of the guard better than George W. Bush himself, who is now pushing revolutionary conservative ideas in every arena from defense to Social Security to tax reform."
Hmm. I'm afraid I'll have to disagree here. First, one could certainly argue that W, faced with someone other than the hapless Al Gore and John Kerry, might never have won the presidency. Liberals lost the presidency, twice, perhaps as much as Bush won it. This is cynical, I suppose, and debatable. But are we really to believe Bush is a “revolutionary” conservative? There’s nothing conservative about his lack of fiscal restraint, his Mexico border policy (the Minutemen as “vigilantes”?), his Middle East policy as it concerns, say, Israel, or the Saudis (at what point, exactly, do U.S. interests diverge from Israel’s? Does this point exist?), or his cheeky position on abortion (I still don’t know what it is – "let's reduce the number of abortions" sounds an awful lot like his father, not to mention Hillary Clinton).
President Bush deserves credit for his successes, and meaningful Social Security reform (read: private accounts) would be wonderful, and "conservative" in the truest sense. And a conservative legacy is perhaps Bush's for the taking inasmuch as he's willing to push a Scalia or Bork through into the Supreme Court. In the meantime, though, it seems the "revolutionary" "conservative" labels seem to be something of a leap.
