Searching For a Reason Why The NY Times Still Has Any Credibility At All
I did an advanced search in the archives of the NY Times on their website at www.nytimes.com.
The results of my search on the following words is pretty disgusting. What they reveal is that some serious "soul searching" is in order. Unfortunately, the most powerful search engine around which can do that, nicknamed "GOD", has gone unused at the NY Times and most of the major media outlets for a while now.
Search term: +Iraq +"mass graves"
New York Times Front Pages Since 1996: 19
Approx # of people dead: 500,000
Search term: +Rwanda +Genocide
NY Times Front Pages since 1996: 48
Approx # of People dead: Almost 1 million slaughtered
Search term: "Abu Ghraib"
NY Times Front Pages Since 2002: 161
Approx # of people dead: 0 (that's less then the body count in Ted Kennedy's car)
My Methodology
Go to the advanced search engine at the NY Times archives
type in
+iraq +"mass graves"
or
+Rwanda +Genocide
or
"abu ghraib"
Choose in the "appearing in" section to search on "Summary".
Do the search on the range of dates (either 1996 to present or 2002 to present) in the sections "Washington", "National", and "International"
Then when the results come back, scroll down and "Narrow your search" to results in "news/front page".
