Of Course She's Running, Part IV
The latest in the prelude to Hillary 2008: Kristen Lombardi of the Village Voice startles no one with her report on Hillary Clinton the "serious hawk," who's been busy working to win federal defense spending projects for New York. More evidence, says Lombardi: Clinton's muzzled her anti-war rhetoric, limiting herself to "thoughtful critique of President Bush's Iraq policy-her concern about the extended use of Guard and Reserve members, about the lack of body armor, about the exit strategy."
Hillary’s clearly lurching toward the center and I’ll defer to the Village Voice as to what is, to a liberal, a “hawk” (according to the article, Hillary has angered some anti-war wingnuts with her Clintonianism – says one: "We'd like the senator to be fighting for drastic cuts in military spending” – so she’s evidently doing something right). Nonetheless I don’t see how a federal spending project for Long Island will do much for Hillary’s image in Ohio or Nevada. As giddy as Lombardi may be about a Clinton redux, this Senator has a lot more to do to convince red states she’s trustworthy on national security.
Related: Lombardi is awfully deferential to Hillary’s advisers, whom she says "take issue with the idea that the senator got on Armed Services simply to boost her résumé. They say Clinton's interest in military and defense matters dates back to her days in the White House, when she pushed for an investigation into why thousands of Persian Gulf war veterans returned with various illnesses." Hey Kristen! Of course they do! But does't this deserve some sort of follow-up? Is a no-lose battle for Gulf War Veterans a free pass for the "idea" (gasp!) that Hillary’s boosting her resume?
