Deal Schmeal

Reacting to the fillibuster compromise today in the Senate, my gut tells me that if we're to entrust the interpretation of "extraordinary circumstances" to Harry Reid, then the Republicans have been hosed, hold the lube. Upon the nomination of the next Christian judge whose 1975 law review demonstrated hostility for Roe v. Wade, or things of such gall, we'll find out how Senate Democrats define "extraordinary." Isn't this precisely their supposed objection to the "extreme" judges to begin with? Today's "bipartisanship" jibber-jabber will be short-lived, and in the end this deal lends far too much credence to the notion there was room for compromise, and Democrats' obstructionism.

We needn't look any further than Kos, who's jubilant:

The Democratic line is that these Republicans, who are under excrutiating pressure and may face Dobson-backed primary challengers as a result, are saying this for domestic consumption. That the reality of the agreement doesn't give the Republicans this much leeway to toss it aside. But still, it's the most worrisome part of this agreement.

Remember, Republicans have a 10-seat majority in the Senate. Given the alternative -- a Dobson controlled Supreme Court nominee -- this is a huge victory.

For once, Kos is dead-on: this was a big win for the Democrats. More: Captain's Quarters / Powerline / Michelle Malkin / More Kos
