The only option?
Bill Frist's speech to the Justice Sunday rally a few weeks back was a shrewd expenditure of political capital earned on November 2nd. By bringing a procedural filibuster debate directly to churches, vagaries were no more: this debate is most certainly one about Christians. As Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council (also part of the simulcast) said: "Just because we believe the in the Bible as a guidepost for life does not disqualify us from participating in our government. As American citizens, we should not have to choose between believing what is in this book and serving the public."
Meanwhile, the Economist offers a startling look at Democrats’ obstructionism of Bush’s nominees, by way of Professor Bainbridge. I think Bainbridge is right to worry that "abolishing the filibuster will come back to haunt us on that inevitable day when a liberal President enjoys a liberal Senate majority (or, at least, a typically spineless GOP majority)" but if it takes the "nuclear option" to convince Democrats the GOP is serious about ending obstructionism, then so be it.
