The Art of the Possible

For the second week in a row, The Weekly Standard offers a piece that is distinctly negative on the prospect of Social Security reform legislation being passed this year. The writers at this publication are not being negative for any but the most honest of reasons: the reform effort is faltering. As Democrats in Congress form an obstructionist bloc, Congressional Republicans are engaging in intramural squabbling over the ideological purity of the reforms being considered (see article here). This is not the time for squabbling, but is instead a time for steely-eyed pragmatism. With the reform effort stumbling badly, it is time for our leaders to abandon their castles in the sky and practice the art of the possible.
