No, SS Benefits Are Not "Guaranteed," and No, Private Accounts Are Not "Unpopular"

Good job, anklebitingpundits! It's high time that someone exposed as false the customary claims in the press that Social Security reform is "unpopular," and that traditional Social Security benefits are "guaranteed." Opening fire on WaPo reporter Jeff Birnbaum, H-Bomb writes:

Except those polls were conducted among “adults” not “voters” and they do not show a majority oppose accounts. Rather, the exact opposite is true. Despite the truly dismal reporting from the Post and other venues, support for personal accounts remains rather high. If you need an example, here’s one: the Washington Post's own poll, which shows support for personal retirement accounts at 56%. That’s three percentage points higher than in their December poll and the highest level since 2000.

Birnbaum pulls another boner when he repeats the long-debunked myth that Social Security benefits are guaranteed. This error is endemic in Post news stories. But if once or twice is an error, when does it become a lie?

The post got a link from RealClearPolitics, so a lot of people will read it. A few more slaps-on-the-wrist, and maybe the MSM will be shamed into providing fair coverage of the Social Security fight.

Show me Publicus, one sentence starting with "I believe" or just what you do believe. All I've seen in naysaying.

Scooter, I'm quite able thanks, and I''ve done it elsewhere in response to your specific request. I appreciate the interest.

I'd like to hear what Publicus does believe, instead of what he doesn't. He seems unable to tell us.

Anyone else think that Publicus doesn't have a life?

There's a curious pleasure here in wondering how to define Scooter. OU812, et al.

If OU812 and his fellow Publicus haters are correct--keep those cards and letters coming, people!--and I am a troll, then they are themselves a weird species of troll followers...and my buddy scooter is a troll's troll. I'll leave this to all of you to decide.

I'm still wondering why my alleged troll-dom is more interesting to all of you than the actual debate, and why it's not comparably important that Nathan seems to base his political philosophy on how badly he overpaid his cell phone bill this month.

Were I an uncharitable kind of guy, I might think that you're all here not to really debate politics of policy or the good of the nation and all that...you're just here to feel like tuff gunslingin' conservatives, and you judge yourselves and each other not on the acuity of your thinking, but on how much you agree with the stuff you're spoon-fed by other blogs.

Just a thought. Comments invited. Murray, once again, great name. You might need to exlpain the reference to the kids here.

Scooter, that is the intent of trolls. To irritate others and provoke a response.

Publicus:

Yes, I read plenty: partisan material from both sides, the occasional news column (although as anklebitingpundits, journalists are typically partisan as well but simply more ignorant), academic papers, and so on.

Publicus, I mean really, you're the most irritating twit.

Is reading a partisan blog on the left supposed somehow to demonstrate that you have something like the breadth of knowledge that you presume? You quoted yourself in a prior post on Social Security before informing us that it ought to be done away with. Forgive the seeming impertenence, Nathan. I'm just curious whether you're taking any trouble to really inform yourself instead of arming yourself with opinions from the people with whom you want to agree.

Murray...cool name!

Publicus, in answer to your question, yes, I read a lot of stuff, including the liberal blog, TalkingPointsMemo, to which I linked in an earlier post. You read and commented on that post yourself, referring to it as a "partisan blog." Well, yes TPM is a partisan blog, but were you aware that it's a partisan blog on the left?

Do you follow my links before dismissing my sources?

Pubicus, do you do anything other than read blogs and troll for responses?

Posted by: Publicus On Thursday, March 31st

Do you read anything except other "conservative" blogs?
